Windows Media Player 11 not opening files through email

In the last week I have not been able to view pictures (jpeg) or wmv files
through my email account. I used to be able to view them both without saving
them first to my computer, now I can't. If I download and save to my computer
first and then view them, it works just fine. So, something is goofed up when
I just try to open them. Anyone have any ideas, or am I going to have to do
an uninstall and then reinstall? I run XP, I am networked to two other
computers, and both of them work fine. It is just mine that won't work, and
it worked fine last week. Thanks for any help.

Since the email app is unidentified, the technique you use to expect the file
to open is unknown, and the error messages you may be getting are all
unknown, any guess on what is wrong is a a stab in the dark.
First guess, I would say your Outlook Express Options are set to not show
links in email.
Second, you have some Permissions error.
Aaron Stebner's WebLog Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to
repair file and registry permissions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx
Third, you have a failed registry entry for shimgvw.dll

start/run, type:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Sorry, never thought to include all that! The email is Yahoo. I don't access
that account through my Outlook Express, I only go to Yahoo to read it. I
have never had any problem with opening the files before. When I click the
attached downloaded file, I get the options of Open, Save, and Cancel, the
Open link won't work. On the photos I get nothing popping up, on the wmv
files I get this notice:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn,
or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that
has been moved, renamed, or deleted."
There is also a Web Help link that brings me to this message:

You've encountered error message C00D1197 while using Windows Media Player.
The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.
Cannot find the file
Windows Media Player cannot find the file. You might encounter this error
message for one of the following reasons:
 You are trying to use a file in the Windows Media Player library, but the
Player cannot find the file. The file may have been moved, renamed, or
deleted from your computer.
 You are trying to use a file that is stored on another computer, but you
are not connected to a local area network (LAN) or to the Internet. Connect
to the network or Internet, and then try again.
 You entered a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Open URL dialog box,
but the path is not valid. Verify that the file name is spelled correctly and
that the path to the file is correct.
 You clicked a link on a Web page, but the link is not valid.
 You are trying to use a file that is stored on a server, but the server is
not available (for example, the server is busy or not online).
 You are trying to use a file that is stored on a server, but some network
protocols in the Player are not enabled. Enable all network protocols, and
then try again.
 You are trying to use a file that is stored on a server, but the server is
not configured correctly for protocol rollover (for example, you connected to
the server using the MMS protocol, but the server cannot roll over to the
HTTP protocol to deliver the content). If you still cannot use the file after
enabling all network protocols in the Player, contact the Web page provider.
 You are trying to use a file that is stored on another computer, but the
proxy server settings for the Player are not configured properly. Verify that
your proxy settings are correct.
To enable all network protocols
Click the arrow below the Now Playing tab, and then click More Options.

Click the Network tab.

In the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes.

To verify your proxy server settings
Click the arrow below the Now Playing tab, and then click More Options.

Click the Network tab.

Verify your settings in the Streaming proxy settings area.

Note
If you do not know what your proxy server settings should be, on the Network
tab, select a protocol, click Configure, and then select Autodetect proxy
settings or Use proxy settings of the Web browser (available for HTTP
protocol only).

Technical Details

component of Windows. The following information describes the original error.

Original Error Code
Original Error Message

So, I assume something is screwed up in my settings or something, or
something is blocking access to these files unless they are saved to my
computer. I checked the streaming protocols and the proxy settings. I hope
this explains it better.

Yahoo is a web page mail app. I suggest clearing the 'browser history'. IE,
tools menu, "Delete Browsing History"

That didn't help. I always keep my computer cleaned up, so to say, cleaning
out the cookies, history, and temp files on a regular basis. My other two
computers do not have this problem, it is only the one I use, so it has to be
something with mine. I updated Windows recently, I think Java might have
updated too. I did not change my settings in any way other than the updates.
Even adding the Yahoo IP address (at least I thing that is what it is) to my
trusted site doesn't allow the files to open. I see a whole bunch of blocked
activities in the eTrust Firewall program log, and I am thinking they are
being blocked. So is it a Firewall problem and do I need to go to CA?

I contacted CA and I turned off the Firewall, and that did not help. So, it
is not a Firewall issue. Being this is the only one of my computers that is
doing this (three are networked together and this one and another one each
have a wireless connected to a router, but the other wireless is working
fine, as is the one connected to the router and the cable connection), I am
stumped. And the Media Player will play news broadcasts and a radio station I
listen to just fine, also the files from Yahoo if I save them to my computer
first. Any other suggestions are appreciated if anyone has a clue. Thanks.

Okay, I just discovered that I have the same problem with Adobe Reader
opening files from my email. I get the message,
"There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found."
After I open it and view it from my saved location, I can go back and try to
open it and get the same message, but the document is underneath the message
box. Once I clear my Temporary Internet Files, I can't view the document
again, I just get the message. This makes me think something is goofy with my
settings or else I am missing something that lets me open Adobe and Windows
Media Player files from a download link off my email. I did do a repair on
Adobe. Anyone have any ideas? By the way, this only happens with IE 6, it
works fine with Mozilla. But I prefer to use IE6.
