when i try to down load media player 10 a message box comes up with windows

Hello ian,
Maybe iot is just me but you haven't given us much to work with.
Like what version of windows you are using etc.

Its telling you that it does not think your Windows was installed from a
Microsoft cd. In other words, that you may have an illegal copy of Windows.
You can click on another link and download anyway, but that will change in a
couple of months too. The Microsoft Genuine Advantage program is new and is
a gradual phasing in of an anti-piracy policy. Now is the time to
legitimize your Windows before you finally get cut off from Windows
Downloads. If your copy of Windows is legitimate, then you should contact
Microsoft on how to fix the issue.

This is a Windows XP group, so what do you reckon, braniac - 98?!

Now that I reread, I think what it is telling you is that an item has not
been certified to be Windows compatible and that you continue at your own
risk. It does not mean the item will not work, just that the developer has
not completed the process of getting Windows Logo Certification. Of course
it also does not mean the item will work either. Set a restore point and
try it.

Well, Hello again, ian ,
What I meant, ian, was Pro or home? I felt the same as miss tick
Only I was giving you the benifit of the doubt. Your reponse proves her right
.. 10 is only for windows that can be proven legit . By the way ian this is
not a paying job, we just try to help and learn with each other. Insulting
those who are trying to help those who give a one sentence problem and
expect an answer in detail, will not really help your issue, . If you had
read the rules instead of trying to duck them you would have found the
answer. The people who help here have worked hard to get here. Most of them
are MVP's which means they are some of the best in the business. I am MCDST
and A + Security and not MVP I just like to help if I can. I . said all
that to say this : No one here is going to help you cheat just for a better
player, maybe you are legit, maybe you don't have XP at all. You never
told us.
I hear insults nightly. You said nothing new. Go to " regarding XP
sucks" for a small sample. You will see Bill Gates has a reply there for this
gent as well as myself and a couple others. Feel free to ask him yourself
why the player won't load. Have a pleasnt day ian. Best of luck to you.

Well, for one, he probably didn't expect a urethra storm all over the desk.
Please go back to sleep or look for something with your own IQ range.

I agree that the WMP group seems more relevant over on that group, but
there's still a lot of confusion over there on WMP10. I was wondering how
the MVP's et al feel about:

Yours was my take on it too,Colin, in fact. Funny thing: I was perusing
something on the the MS site the other day and came across a Windows
MediaPlayer downloads page where rev 9 was recommended for XP but rev 10
wasn't recommended.
It seemed strange to me, and I didn't see any explanation available, but
I was in a hurry at the time. That does fit my experience, for what it's
worth, and I was wondering if fok here had an experienced comment on this:
On both my and my sister's machine, WMP 10 acted up, never did install as
fully functional. My machine was clean and I fully cleaned hers (Norton av,
4 spyware progs, firewall correct, etc etc, all current, up to date SP2+).
XP Pro here and XP Home on hers. I know for a long time it was a Beta, but
it appeared to be the prime-time version 10 that was on that page where 9
was the XP recommended version.
I've also seen a LOT of discussion in the past on rev 10 and its
merits/demerits. Some it works great for, others it goes to pieces, and the
few I did get involved with, their experience turned out to be the same as
my sister and I had with a couple of exceptions for poorly maintained
machines.

Did I just miss an obvious explanation, or what? Or maybe I was just using
my blind eye at that moment in the universe?

I am using WMP10 on XP Pro SP2 with Norton stuff and all the usual suspects
as far as antispyware goes and WMP simply hasn't been a problem. I just
don't have any war stories about it although I read them here just as you.
I don't know what to say about it except that those who are into media
players tend to get into places on the web I won't go near.

I have taken note of the fact that the OE spellchecker keeps wanting to
change "WMP" to "Wimp". Do you suppose that is significant? :)

<snip>

LOL! I've come across the spellcheck thingie too! Maybe it knows something
we don't!

I'd agree with your comment about media WMPs (speller OFF) going to places
you wouldn't go near, but ... ahh, I ended up in that group, and I'm
perfect! <g>

I've been tempted to just dump it into the SP2 problem bin, but ... it
doesn't quite fit the pattern.

It's really NBD, but if you're interested here is the URL I mentioned
initially where rev 9 is specifically indicated for XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp

Under the "professionals" left hand box on that same page, there are lots of
links & hypes for rev 9, but rev 10 for some reason is missing from the
linked pages I looked at.

I know it's hard to keep pages current, but this little bit of
uncharacteristic-for-MS evidence makes me wonder if there's something MS
knows that they aren't letting out, which is characteristic.

Guess it'll remain an enigma. I'm happy with 9 anyway, and since it ain't
costin' me nuttin', far's I know anyway, I ain't complaining!
OK, I'll go away now and leave you to more interesting things <g>.

Regards,

Pop

PS - I think I just noticed the problem!! There were TWO rev 9's! One was
special for XP! I'll bet they didn't carry all the "fixes" forward into 10,
whatever they were, or did so incorrectly in some obscure part of the code!
I never noticed the dual-version 9's before; it must be relatively new.

OK, THIS time I'm really done! That's enough answer for me.

Pop

Perfection is not only elusive,
it is also limited with unexpected and
dangerous results for the idealist.
