After hacking around for ages to get WMI to work, all the dependent services are now running (Event Log, WMI, RCP) and I have the correct user rights. However, WMI is now returning a "WMI: Generic Fault" error. WMI Control (via Computer Management) displays for properties: "Failed to connect to <local computer> because of "WMI generic failure".

Any suggestions welcome...

Thanks for the input - turns out it was the Repository folder under WBEM. Once I deleted this folder and rebooted (it is automatically recreated), the WMI fired up properly (msinfo32) and displayed all the info needed. WOT A NIGHTMARE - 3 days in the fixing...!
