After using Windows Mail for some months, suddenly every time I open it I am
asked to verify that "both the username and password are correst for your
mail server". When I input my username and password it opens OK, but what has
happened to raise this question and how do I stop it being asked.

Running McAfee or Norton antivirus? Uninstall them. They are
incompatible with Windows Mail.

No, I run AVG free (although my new Mesh computer has McAfee preloaded but I
haven't purchased it)
BUT today Mail is working OK, and I never touched it! Must be you Gary, just
thinking about it fixed it.

Good to hear it's working now. Sometimes your ISP's mail server will have
a temporary glitch in its authentication system.

Uninstall McAfee.
Turn off email scanning in AVG.
