when i try to open an attachment that is in excel or word it says there is no
associated program and to go to set association control panel. How do I do
this and where do I find it.

Do you have Excel or Word or a Viewer for them?
 
its much easier to just save the attachment and then open it with the appropriate program.

Save such an attachment.
Shift-Right Click it and choose "open with".
Choose the proper program and check the box to Always use.
