When I open link in some messages, WM restarts itself. Others work just fine.

Try setting WinMail default under Control Panel | Default programs.

WinMail is the default mail program. I'm also getting DEP faults on
things like Sidebar and Windows Help.

Just to update - I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. Now the links
bring up a Firefox window but I still get a "windows Mail has stopped
working" with a Close Program message apparently caused by DEP.

Sounds like your problems are deeper than just Windows Mail.
