I have a friend who uses Vista Ultimates windows mail and when you
close the mail client it comes up with a did not close down properly
error message. It then either restarts or simply has a box which says
close program. The mail folders are in the wrong place though she says
she has never moved them and when I try to restore there original
location the error on close stops the changes being made.

Why do you say the folders are in the wrong place? Where are they?
Does she have permissions for the location to which you are trying to move
them?

The foders are currently stored in c:\mydocuments\local foders which
contains only the email information, there is nothing else in this my
documents folder.
She was having the stuck email problem so I tried a reset of folders
but it didnt remove the emails from the default location. when I
investigated this I found that the email was stored in the above
mentioned location. Ithink the reason it cant update the location is
because the mail program will not close properly therefore doesnt keep
the updated info.
The location isnt so much a problem as the refusal of windows mail to
close properly since it always comes up with the error mentioned. It
says it is checking for a solution but returns no info apart from a
box which says close program.

Yes, the location may be problem. I'm sure Frank will get back to you with a
solution, but in the meantime search this forum for posts or Vista's Help for
a description of "junctions". They are virtual locations for legacy programs
that point them to Vista's new locations. For instance, you say the folders
are in MyDocuments. Vista changed the name of MyDocuments to Documents.
Therefore, WM is looking in a virtual folder for your email data. I'm sure
Frank can resolve your problems. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you
can understand his reply more easily.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll wait for Frank's reply.

My Documents is not a real folder, it's what is called a junction. That's
not the real location.

Well, I guess I'm not sure. There shouldn't even be a C:\mydocuments.
I assume you can see that folder with Windows Explorer but can't access it.
In WinMail click Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder.
What does it list?

That is the bemusing part of it. I have been into that folder and
followed the instructions found elsewhere for resseting the mail
folders ie. copying that folders contents to another known location
for messages and for account info, deleting the folders then starting
up mail again then putting back the account and messages. This has
worked fine but its from this other location. The main problem as I
have said is that mail will not close without errors. The sending and
recieving of mail is working fine. in the Tools |Options |Advanced |
Maintenance | Store Folder is the location c:\mydocuments\local store

thanks for the response brink. The location is part of the problem and
I've read that if you set it then exit winmail using the task manager
it retains the reset store location. do you know if this is true. Do
you need to have a live ID to use windows Live Mail?

No live ID required.
