Windows Mail Send/Receive Problem

I have a rather obnoxious problem. Windows Mail will not Send or Receive
after the first send/receive at the start-up. No matter how you try to
send/receive. Clicking the icon on the tool bar or selecting any of the
choices in the Send and Receive menu bar commands: RECEIVE ALL, SEND ALL,
SEND AND RECEIVE ALL or choose the default account listed at the bottom of
the menu list.
After creating a new outbound message you click SEND on the toolbar and you
get the same message:

"Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. please review
the list of errors below for more details." But the list below the error
message is blank. Followed by the status bar reading " 0 of 1 tasks have
complete successfully"

Any ideas???

This sounds quite similar to a problem I have been having where the first
send/receive is fine, however any future send/receive requests are met by a
blank error. Only an individual send OR receive request works, not the two
together. This error occuredfor me after I imported messages and settings
from a backup previously made.

I am running Norton Antivirus 2007 and have tried turning this off,
uninstalling and everything you can think of in order to make this fully
functional, however at the moment my only solution is to close down Windows
Mail and then restart it, after which you will still receive the error for
any send/receive attempts subsequent to the initial one.

If anyone does have a solution please let us know.

Interesting, how have this been happening?
I just bought the laptop today this is happening on.
Haven't installed a non-windows firewall yet or antivirus, haven't imported
anything. The only that I have done was to visit the MS update site and
apply the latest updates. Then opened the Windows mail program. Hopefully
the rest of Vista works better than this?

I was told to try the uninstallation of Norton AV, however it has since
confirmed that it is not related to this issue at all. I hope that someone
is able to release a fix soon or at least give some indication as to what is
causing the problem.

Some people say that you shouldn't be too suprised if Windows Mail is not
working as you would expect as it is only a minor part of the overall OS
package, but personally as I have paid for Vista I expect it and all
associated elements within it to function as they should.

It is possible that this problem is caused by your antivirus.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or
Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Is it even possible to buy a new laptop without a 'trial' version
of either McAfee or Norton antivirus already installed?
If you are sure you don't have an antivirus program, your only
solution will be to upgrade to a more stable email program,
like Windows Live Mail:

Thanks for your responsem however I have already established that this issue
isn't related to Norton Antivirus as I have completely eliminated it from my
system and the problem still exists. It is just very frustrating for those
of us who don't wish to use another program.

Install this fix and then empty the Outbox:
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista

After removing Norton run this tool:

and then delete and recreate the account.

If Frank's suggestions don't work out for you, you may have
little choice but to try a different email program.
It may well be that while you had NAV installed it corrupted
your Windows Mail beyond repair.
Windows Live Mail works well for me:

This maybe seem a stupid question under the circumstances, but if I download
Windows Live Mail do I definitely have to have my Hotmail account set up as
an email account which I synchronize with the software? I am quite happy to
check my hotmail periodically for messages when I sign in to Windows Live
Messenger and am just looking for a program which will allow me to check my
other e-mail accounts including Gmail, ISP provided inbox and other
accounts?

Many thanks.

WLM is very flexible. You can configure it to sync with Hotmail
or not, your choice. You don't even have to have a Hotmail
account. Everything is pretty much optional and configurable.

I can confirm that this problem is not related to any anti-virus
software. I have just built a brand new machine less than 2 weeks ago
and installed Windows Vista. I'm having the exact same problem as of
about a week ago and have no anti-virus software of any kind
installed. This is most definitely a bug in Vista's "Windows Mail"
program. An additional problem this creates is that since it can't
finish downloading my messages from the server, it never gets to the
point where it deletes them from the server, so it keeps downloading
the same messages over and over and over... really annoying.

A couple of important observations:
1. I've been using Windows Mail in Vista since December 2006 with no
real problems on my prior computer (also one I built).
2. I copied over all my e-mail data, manually, from my old hard
drive. I noticed one other person in this thread did something
similar.

Before I had Vista, I used Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
thunderbird/). I may switch back (but I think I'll try Windows Live
Mail first). The search features of Thunderbird are FAR FAR FAR
superior to Windows Mail, BTW.

There are several different errors in this thread. What error messages do
you get?
You can neither send not receive?

CSharpner, your problem is different from the one I was
responding to, so I don't follow your statement "I can confirm
that this problem..."

In regard to *your* issue, failure of messages to finish
downloading is usually caused by a corrupted message on
the server. Log in to your account on the web server, and
delete the offending message. If your provider does not offer
webmail access, you can use http://mail2web.com.

Like the message that was quoted in my reply, there is no error.
There is a statement about errors, as quoted in my reply. I'll copy
it again here from the original poster (Sagazoid):

I can receive on 2 accounts, but on the third account (my default
account), is where it fails with the quoted problem.

I didn't state a problem. I only responded to the original problem...
the same problem you replied to. I did add some additional
information, but my problem is the same as Sagazoid's. I'll copy it
again here:

I am my own provider. I run my own e-mail server at a hosted
location. When I use Thunderbird (I've switched to it in the last few
days), I don't have the problem.

You click Details and there's no error on the Errors tab?
