Hi - I just got a new computer w/Vista a week ago, and so far, it's crashed
once, ran in safe mode 8 times, and now won't load and send mail consistently
with windows mail. I called my isp, have configurations correct. Called
computer manufacturer, who told me it's an issue with windows mail program,
and there's no known fix at the moment. I have Outlook 2003 (not loaded on
this computer) that I could use, but is there some other fix or patch?

I have a similar problem, updated into a new computer last month and
everything went well till two weeks ago when it quit sending mail out, just
holds it in the outbox. Microsoft will be making Vista obsolete in 2010 due
to it being a huge flop, so the idea of a fix is somewhat remote at best.
Personally, MAC's are looking better all the time! Try any other mail program
as Windows Mail is nothing short of a serious time waster. I'll be trying
"Thunderbird" as it's a free one on the net. Good Luck

First thing is to remove McAfee or Norton AV and antispam from the computer
if they exist. You may need to visit their website to fully uninstall the
product (for Norton see here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039.
Then get something less invasive. There are a number of free antivirus
programs, but with any you have to disable email scanning. See
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

You can also try compacting and repairing the database using my WMUtil
program (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/). And for stuck outbox messages, you can
use the "Clear Outbox" button.

Do you get an error message? What is the exact message?

In addition to what Steve said, you can use Outlook 2003
if you can't get Windows Mail to work properly.

Are your Vista crashes occurring with Windows Mail only
or also with other programs? If the latter, I'd take the PC
back to where you got it from, since it is under warranty.

Not recommending Thunderbird any longer Gary? :-)

I'm definitely not a TB fanboy, and won't use it myself.
The OP said she had Outlook 2003 available, so why not.
I'm guessing she used it before and it would therefore be
more familiar to her than Thunderbird.

My Windows mail isn't sending either, I can't even clear my outbox. From what
I am reading, thats it??? No fix??
If Vista is such a flop, why are Microsoft not doing something to fix it
now, that is what is installed on our new notebook, would I be better off
chucking XP back on???

If you can't delete messages that are stuck in the outbox,
you should try the latest edition of the WMUtil utility:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
When you download the file, be sure to choose Save rather than Run.
After it finishes downloading choose Run, then Extract. Then it will
show the extracted folder with two files in it. Run WMUtil.exe, and
click Clear Outbox. It may take a while. Before you start, make sure
Windows Mail is not running.

What Gary said.

Yeah, that's another bridge to cross when they get to it.
Many people don't use NNTP, so they won't miss it.

That's okay for email, but what about NNTP? Stuck with WinMail.
