Windows Mail not recognizing LAN access instead of Dial-UP

I have set the proper directions for accessing the Internet via a LAN instead
of Dial-UP and do not have any numbers defined in a Dial-UP option. Yet,
when Windows Mail is initiated, it immediately tries to access via Dial-UP
but does not have a number. The Internet is active and I can get to any Web
site. Does anyone have an idea on how to reset Windows Mail so that it goes
out to recognize that an open Internet access is available?

In Windows Mail, go to Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties,
Connection tab, and make sure the settings there are grayed out, indicating
that IE's settings will be used. Do this for all accounts.

Next, go to Internet Explorer's Tools/Internet Options.
Click on the Connections tab. Make sure "Never dial a connection" is
ticked. In fact, it should be grayed out, indicating that Vista recognizes
that an Internet connection via the LAN is present.

Hope this helps.

Gary,
Thanks for the info. I have done as you indicated. However, when I go to
"tools" and try to go to connection, Windows Mail stops responding and I have
to either Stop, Restart, etc...

Any suggestions?

This symptom sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't remember the
details of how it was resolved.

Some of the possible causes are incompatible third party
security products (antivirus, anti-spyware, etc.) and some older
programs.

Gary,

I hope you can recall a solution to this one as I am having exactly the same
problem as Wayne -- the dial-up screen pops up when the rest of the program
seems to acknowledge that it already is on-line. (I get the same freezing
when I attempt the previous directions as well, but note there is really
nothing to "grey out.")

The dial-up symptom is secondary. I would think the priority is in solving the
freezing issue when going to the Connection tab. Sorry, I don't
remember a specific fix for this problem. All I can suggest is either
a repair-install of Vista:

or switching to Windows Live Mail:
