I am perfectly willing to believe it's me, but I can't find a method
of altering the way Wmail quotes messages received.

All it seems willing to do is quote the message in full with a big
black line down the left margin. It can't cope with quoting part of
the message and then allowing me to add my comments.

Any ideas? I really don't want Outlook if I can avoid it.

TIA

No problems here, did you change any setting in the options panel?

I get that when the original email is in HTML format, which I only use if I
want to embed a picture. When I get emails like that I change the format to
text ( format/plain text) and the line goes away.

If you do not want the (HTML mode) black line, click TOOLS
menu|OPTIONS|SEND tab and UNcheck the "send messages in the format in
which they were received" box.

That signifies HTML indentation.

You can remove it completely by going to Tools | Options | Send | HTML
settings and unchecking the option to indent message on reply.

Alternatively, you can click in the reply and use the decrease indentation
button on the formatting toolbar to the right of the font size and stuff.
