In the left column where the folders are listed is it possible to have
"contacts" listed there as well like in Outlook Express?

Also, every time I use the contacts button on the tool bar and select a
contact and send the email, after it's finished it always says "windows
contacts is shutting down and will reopen when a solution to the problem is
found". What's that about?

1. No, that's not possible.

2. Try this:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Contacts". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Incidentally, Microsoft recommends that you start a new email as follows:
a) click Create Mail
b) in the compose window click on 'To'
c) select the recipient.
