Windows Mail Import Problem

Lemme see if I can explain this.

I was running XP Pro SR2 using Outlook Express. Along came RC1 (I won't
even bother mentioning Beta 2) and Windows Mail to replace Outlook Express.
I've always kept my mail data files on a separate drive so that if I did a
complete reformat and reinstall I could always easily point Outlook Express
to the proper folder on my D: drive and I'd have all my mail folders and mail
back.

But Windows Mail obviously creates a different mail data file than Outlook
Express did so when I did a complete reinstall of Vista RC2 I had to Import
to get my Outlook Express mail back. BUT, and here's the problem, Windows
Mail under RC2 does not see the mail created with Windows Mail under RC1 and
so I have been unable to import it.

It's strange that I was able to point Windows Mail under RC1 to my mail
folder on my D: drive and everything worked fine. But Windows Mail under RC2
recognizes that there is something in that mail folder and so it won't allow
me to use it as my mail folder. And I can't import anything that was written
with Windows Mail under RC1, even if I try to import Mail 7.0.

The bottom line is that while I presume the mail is still on my D: drive, I
have lost all access to it under RC2. Unfortunately, some of that mail
contains serial numbers for newly-registered software that I now have no
access to.

Any suggestions?

Yea... i got the same problem... i dont have access to my old mails.. i have
tried almost everyway but i think we need some upgrade patch from microsoft
to resolve this problem.
so far... windows mail is of no use for me.
 
Search the old drive for *.eml. The files are stored as individual
messages, so when you find them, you can just drag all the eml files overtop
a WinMail (or OE) folder message list and drop them to reincorporate them
into the current message store.

The default location for the mail folders is

Systemdrive:\Users\UserName\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

Under that will be the Local Folders directory and the messages are under
the subdirectories that match the folder names.

A post relating to Windows Mail Imports......................Has anyone had a
problem importing from Outlook to Windows Mail with the new RC2??? I
recently upgraded to RC2 build 5744..........and tried to import my messages
from Outlook. Everything came thru except that ALL messages were in Chinese,
Japanese, or Korean, or some language to that effect. It appears that the
developer worked in his/her native language and then forgot to reset back to
english before finalizing the build.
 
Has anyone with this problem said anything about any anti-virus software
perhaps being involved? Could a message be quarantined and exhibit such
behavior?

Thanks, Steve, but there were no *.eml files to be found anywhere, only *.dbx
files. I'm beginning to think that what really happened is that when Windows
Mail installed under RC1 it actually created its default mail location and
not, as I had thought, my mail database folder on my D: drive. So when I did
a clean install of RC2, all my earlier mail, under RC1, was lost. Bummer.

Incidentally, I checked the default Windows Mail folder under my current RC2
but found no *eml files there, either.

I am now confused as to what you actually have available and what you don't.
But if you still have the Outlook Express messages, you might be able to
recover them with Thunderbird. I just go all of mine off an XP drive.

DBX files are from OE, not WinMail.

EML files are there. Perhaps you need to do an advanced search and also
need to show hidden files and folders to see them, although I'm not seeing
that in RC2.

If you go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder and
copy that path and then add

\Local Folders\Inbox\

and paste that into Explorer then you will see the eml files. Make sure
hide extensions of known file types is not checked.
