In Outlook Express I used to be able to launch emails directly from my
address book contacts list which I configured to appear below my folders list
on the left. This made emailing very quick and easy.

In Windows Mail however I do not seem to be able to configure the contacts
list in the same way and have to open a new message first and then search
through my contacts list - which is longer. Is there some way I can set this
up in the same way as before?

Thanks.

No.

you should not have to SEARCH, simply type the first few characters of the name and it should auto fill in.
you apparently have to send mail to that contact one time for it to auto fill.

If you open Contacts and click on a record, a toolbar button and a
right-click option give you the opportunity to send an email.

Thanks for your help guys. All the things you suggest I have already tried.
The old system of just clicking on a contact that was always visible on the
left of the screen was so simple and quick it makes my wonder why they
bothered to make it more complex, if ony slightly so.

Ah well!!

You can do it, but not in the Windows Mail window.

With Contacts open, click on the desired Contact to select it or, if you
wish, select multiple contacts in any of the normal ways. Then, right-click
the selection and click Action, Send E-mail.

Windows Mail will open with the selected address(es) in the "To:" pane.
