I've just upgraded from Windows XP Professional to Windows Vista Business.

I'm trying to use the bundled Windows Mail Application as my Newsgroup
Reader. However, one thing that disturbs me is that every time I open up
one of my newsgroups, while it is downloading the Next Headers for posts, it
almost always marks one of the posts that I have not yet read as read. How
can I stop this so that I really know what posts I've read and which ones
I've not read?

Thanks in advance.

Hi John, not exactly clear on your statement "almost always marks one of the
posts that I have not yet read as read", if you mean that it auto selects
the first message, that is by default in WM, it was not the default in OE.

I suppose the only way to be 'almost sure' is to add the 'Sync All' button
to the toolbar, Rt click>customize>add from left to right, use that prior to
entering a newsgroup?

If I am off the mark, please get back.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your answer.

It's not that it auto selects the first message. It somehow selects a
message further down the list and marks that as read, usually while the new
posts are being downloaded. And I don't want to lengthen the amount of time
before WM marks a message as read...I just want it not to try to read any
messages until I
tell it to.

Unfortunately its broken "by design". MS decided in its Ivory Towers that
would be the best way to do things, without consulting the users.
