Windows Locks when right-clicking on desktop

Recently whenever I right-click while my mouse cursor is over the Windows
desktop, instead of the desktop settings menu appearing, the cursor just
turns into the hour glass and my computer locks up, requiring a re-boot. Any
idea what causes this and how I can fix it?
