I am running IE6 with service pack 1. Windows opens up fine and browses fine.
When I get ready to shutdown, I close all open windows and when I hit the
start button for shutdown, it sticks in and I have to power down manually. I
reopen windows and hit the start button and shutdown normally as I have for
years.

any thoughts or suggestions?

See http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm for Win9x
or http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm for WinXP

Mona----the very same thing has started happening to me! Did you get any help
from anyone?

Not sure why you are posting this in a browser newsgroup.

If you haven't already done so I would suggest re-posting at

Sometimes this can be related to a NVIDA video card incompatibility with
other hardware after installing Service Pack 2.

There is at least one report of a strange conflict between SP2, a NVIDA card
an a 1394 Firewire card.

Good luck.
