Hi there,
I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the Free online Windows OneCare safety scanner.
It seems my Outlook Express does not work so well now - I used the scanner, then deleted the scanner after it had removed/repaired things on my pc. Now when I open my Outlook Express it now comes up with the error: "an extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may be open in another program. Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then click properties to check your permissions for the folder. You don't have appropriate permission to perform this operation."
I will post two Hijackthis logs - as I would like to know if I am best to use system restore to revert to my old settings before I used the scanner or not ( I did make some changes once I used the Hijackthis the first time - when I probably should not have - but my pc ran fine, although slow).
Any advice would be fantastic - sure hope this made sense! Thanks for your help with these matters. (I used the online scanner on the 11/05/07)

Cheers :)

Here is the Hijackthis log before I used the Windows online scanner:

Thank you again for your assistance!

Damn, I just noticed my serial numbers listed for windows updates and the like - ack! :(

Nothing jumps out at me as a nastie ... in either scan. :thumb:

Remember that Hijackthis must be run in an own folder. Only if Hijackthis run in an own folder it will create backups!
... as you have no need to "fix" anything, just remember for future use. ;)

No "numbers" you posted here are representative to any "serial" numbers. :D

The solution to your error ... "an extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: extend.dat" ... should be an easy one to fix.

Search for or go to ... \Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express ... extend.dat

If extend.dat does exist, just rename it to extend.bak ...make sure Outlook Express & Internet Explorer are closed.

Reboot the PC and OE will/should rebuild this file from information in the registry.

PS ... WOC is an infant program ... I personally would not trust it.

Thanks for the help with the HijackThis readings - and the advice for Outlook Express.
I did a search for the extend.dat file and found it in the below places.
The search shows it being in two places:
1) \Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
2) \Program Files\Outlook Express

However in the first location there is no file I can visibly see called extend.dat - there are only these:- outcmd (dat file), outlook (Office data file), Outlook.srs (srs file), Outlook (fav file), Exception list & Junk senders (both text files).

In the second location there is also no file I can visibly see called extend.dat - there are only these:-
msimn, msoe.dll, oeimport.dll, oemiglib.dll, wabimp.dll, wab, msoeres.dll, oemig50, setup50, wabfind.dll, wabmig, msoe(text file).

I don't understand why in the start/search function the extend.dat file is located in both files, yet when I look in the files it's not there.
I can rename the file itself in the search window - but if I rename it extend.bak - the file itself will then just show up as extend.bak.dat won't it? I'm a bit of a novice eh? lol
Thanks again for your help! :)

oops, sorry, forgot ... :o

You need to ...

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

:D

Then try again with my previous destructions. :thumb:

The idea of renaming the file is not to loose it, but set it as a non-active file. do not use a double dot file extention as you sugested ... just rename the file from extend.dat to extend.bak ;)

Geez, I feel like a tool - thanks for your help - but I need to ask one more question please-
How do I rename it to a .bak file? I can change the actual file name from extend to something else - but am at a loss presently as to how to change the actual extension.
Thank you again for your help and patience muckshifter.
