....when I try to download the scanning tools IE freezes. I am trying to use
the free online scan. All the IE8 windows I have opened lose their connection
but Skype stays connected ok. This has been happening for 3 months so I
downloaded the free trial of Windows Live One Care and had no problems with
that and had no problems with the trial version.

Perhaps there was a Q there?
Windows Live One Care is due to be dumped by MS, I believe, though they will
be happy to take a subscription fee from you

lol, they were never going to get a fee from me, I only ever fancied the free
online scan and the registry clean up because I mucked about with any sorts
of softwares. Gee, NZ$119...no way hoseh.

Did Windows OneCare detect anything ?

Either the ActiveX malware scanner is causing the freezing issue when it
attempts to install or scan the system.

See if the system can be scanned here:

ESET Online Scanner
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

ESET uses an ActiveX scanner, too.
So does Kaspersky:

Today we got a copyright infringement notice from our isp...the boy
downstairs...has been downloading the latest movies with a bit torrent
software...lol...hmm. He gets a warning tonight and a surprise email...
I have experienced a bit torrent software in this house before and we got
caught by the seeding thing...the guy who had the torrent did not know the
program automatically began seeding with the installation.
I pleaded ignorance with our isp and wriggled out of a $50 fee...I was
ignorant at the time about the extra cost in the isp bill for that month.
But, I am aware of the threat of viruses etc through bit torrent software,
being that it is basically illegal to download copyright material that any
tom dick or harry can use it easily to his own end.
So I thought maybe there is a problem there and perhaps so because our
downstairs boys top of the range 3 aerialed new wirelesss router is giving us
alot of internet disconnections. We did not have this with the wired router.
I am doing an online security scan with Esret now, then I think I will try
Symantec and Trend Micro.
I will try to remember to tell the other people in the house to do the same
security checks.

Look what happened when I try to open the > http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
link...Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your
computer . Now I am trying TrendMicro and that page has opened...now the same
thing happens when I try to downlaod Java from java.com .

I'd be willing to bet that the *most likely* cause of all these issue is
that your system is infected.
That's why you can't access any online scanners.
So the questions just keep on comin' ... how did you get OneCare
installed and, is it and the system able to update ?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
