Windows Live Messenger - Where to Get Help?

D

DavidM

I have a problem with Windows Live Messenger in that it
keeeps causing my PC to reboot when, or shortly after I
login. I've tried deleting it, and it's database files, and
reinstalling, and running it my firewall and virus checker
disabled (but only briefly!) - still causes reboot.

I noticed that the advert pane at the bottom of the window
is frozen (no scrolling adds). May be relevant.

Any idead where I can get help or advice to diagnose the
problem? messenger-support.spaces is no help at all.

Thanks, David

Please post a copy of the Error Report as it appears in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

How frequently is this error occuring? Does it occur just on Start Up or
after Start-Up

Background information on Stop Error report:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms794023.aspx

A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler
didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues
(which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

Have you made any recent changes to RAM memory? How many memory sticks
are installed? Test the RAM
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

Dust inside the computer casing can cause overheating and result in this
type off. Take the casing off and use an Air Duster to clean. Also check
that all fans are working.

..Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

The crash only happens when I log in in to Windows Live Messenger, and
then only about 50% of this time. Sometimes it happens immediately but
other times can happen up to 20 seconds later, so far never later than that.

No recent changes to memory and I have run memtest with no errors
reported. I have cleaned out the inside of the PC recently, all fans are
running. No yellow flags in device manager.

I've since found this thread
http://blog.plaxoed.com/2006/07/17/memory-leak-in-windows-live-messenger/
and disabled sharing folders in WLM. So far the crash has not happened
again. Thought I'd post the link here in case anyone else finds it useful.

What version of Windows Live Messenger do you have installed?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for msnmgr.exe.

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?
