Greetings,
Messenger attempts to use WinInet to connect (aka IE). As well, Messenger uses the same
security libraries as an Internet Explorer to validate your login. So in general, if your
Internet Explorer is broken or misconfigured, Messenger may not be able to connect either.
The first thing you should do is open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Internet
Options, then Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and make sure all the options
are unchecked. Then try again.
Failing that you might want to make sure that you don't have any firewall software installed
which is blocking it and do a scan for malware (grab the Windows Defender if you don't have a
scanner already) as some malware operates as local proxies and can block both IE and
Messenger from working properly.
