my windows xp computer has been running slow for a few days, i am by no means
a computer wiz but i can get arround a bit, and i have done everything i can
think of to try to speed things up and nothing is doing the job. i did notice
somewhere in my system information it says my physical memory is 512 mb and
it says my actual physical memory is 157.something. could all that memory
being taken up the reason im running slow?how does it get taken up and is
there anything i can do to clean it....thanks

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Any memory optimisers installed?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You may use one of RamBooster or RamOptimizer softwares to enhance Ram
performance.
Good luck!

Not a very clever recommendation Sami!

No, that's not the reason your system is slow. There's no way to tell
what your problem is with so little information, but these days that's
very often symptomatic of malware infection. I recommend that you
begin troubleshooting by going to MVP Malke's malware removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and
following the instructions there.

You may use one of RamBooster or RamOptimizer softwares to enhance Ram
performance.

Sorry to disagree, but as far as I'm concerned, that's *terrible*
advice. All programs like these are nothing but snake oil. They are
much more likely to cause a problem than to solve one.

yes sorry thats what i meant . im trying to understand how the ram works and
how to free it up. i dont understand where all my ram is going. and if thats
whats making my system run slow

Your Commit Charge figures do not show excessive use of the pagefile but
if I were you I would consider adding more RAM memory.

I recommend you do not leave the computer switched on overnight. If you
any programmes having memory leaks the memory is not released. There are
a number of commonly used programmes currently have this bug.

It would also be helpful to have this further information.

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

I suggest you download and run cCleaner (freeware)
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has
irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

A tip for Disk CleanUp, which is needed for removing System Restore
points. Select Start, All Programs, accessories, System
Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the
latest System Restore point. This facility is not available with
cCleaner.

You then need to run Disk Defragmenter.

May I draw your attention to the size of history.db, a file relating
PeerGuardian2, which is 631 mb. I have no knowledge of this programme
either as to how it works or how useful it is. Research, however,
indicates that others have found this to be a problem and some have
reported files much larger than the one on your system. Clearly handling
a file of this size on an ongoing basis will have an impact on
performance.

or two times a week i will leave it on for 24 hours or
more.....thanks For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as
it is more informative.

Any memory optimisers installed?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot.
No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also
appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close
Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the
body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting
from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

nothing is doing the job. i did notice somewhere in my system
information it says my physical memory is 512 mb and it says my
actual physical memory is 157.something. could all that memory
being taken up the reason im running slow?how does it get taken up
and is there anything i can do to clean it....thanks

yes sorry thats what i meant . im trying to understand how the ram works and
how to free it up. i dont understand where all my ram is going. and if thats
whats making my system run slow

No, as I said, that's *not* what making your system slow.

Wanting to minimize the amount of memory Windows uses is a
counterproductive desire. Windows is designed to use all, or nearly
all, of your memory, all the time, and that's good not bad. Free
memory is wasted memory. You paid for it all and shouldn't want to see
any of it wasted.

Windows works hard to find a use for all the memory you have all the
time. For example if your apps don't need some of it, it will use that
part for caching, then give it back when your apps later need it. In
this way Windows keeps all your memory working for you all the time.

You have apparently experienced a sudden slowdown. As I pointed out,
that is *very* suggestive of a malware infection. You should rule out
that possibility before doing anything else. Go to the link I posted
below.

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

Run a scan from here on-line:

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis) is
the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post

What specifically have you done to try to speed things up?

I assume that you meant that System Information stated you have about
157 MB of *available* physical memory, correct? If so, that is good, not
bad. It's always better to have too much RAM than not enough RAM. :-)

What do you use to detect and remove malware?

Do you recall doing anything in particular prior to your slowdown?
