Unfortunately, we don't have enough information about your system to
give you focused troubleshooting. Here are some suggestions:

1. Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free. Here are general steps
to go through. Do everything systematically, including the preparatory
work.

2. If the machine is clean, check to make sure your drives are using
some flavor of DMA and not the older PIO. Here is a link to MVP
Hans-Georg Michna's page on this issue:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm

3. If the machine is clean and the drives are not using PIO, then do
clean-boot troubleshooting:

Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

4. Look in Event Viewer to see if there are any clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

If this troubleshooting work isn't your cup of tea - and there is no
shame in admitting that - take your machine to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

I wouldn't count on that, but I gave you other things to do to
troubleshoot besides scan for viruses and malware.
