I just put a copy of Windows XP SP2 on my PC, I ran all the update
except the
two .net one because they fail to install. I have tried to install
Norton
System works 2006 which will not install, I have tried to install the
latest
Java and that says windows installer service fails to start. I have
downloaded the latest windows installer and used the one that Norton's
disk
say to use and none of the programs still will install. Any
suggestions on
what may cause this problem and any cure?

Have you rebooted the computer recently? Really! All those updates require
a reboot. Some of them more than one. -Dave

Yes I rebooted. I think the problems started when the PC crashed
during the installation of Noron System Works, which didn't fully
install and I couldn't get it to remove from the ad-remove programs
section. I had to go to Symantec and use a tool from their site.

omigod, why didn't you mention norton earlier? Norton causes so many system
problems, it should identify ITSELF as a very dangerous virus, and delete
itself immediately and permanently -Dave
