I'm trying to patch and bring up to date several W2K Pro machines which have
never had Windows Update run. After going through the first pass, which
upgraded IE to 6, Windows Installer wants to run and is asking for the
Microsoft Office Small Business Edition cd, so it can process SBERET.MSI

Any suggestions as to why this is happening? I've been cancelling it, but
it's quite persistent.

Thanks.

Did the machines ever have Microsoft Office Installed? You can see if they
were at one time by obtaining the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility. This
is an unsupported utility at Microsoft that can be run AFTER a Windows
Installer technology has been uninstalled and use only then.

I would get the link for you but Microsoft is not well and I cannot connect
lately with any degree of confidence.

yes, the machines have microsoft office installed.

my concern is that there is something less than appropriate about applying
W2K patch and then receiving a request from windows installer for the Office
CD.

maybe i'm being a little paranoid, but...

No I wouldn't worry about it. There may be a Windows Component or some such
thing where the CD-ROM for office is needed. But yes that shouldn't happen.
I have never seen it myself actually but give it what it wants. You know
you might check the event viewer usually a popup (message box) like that is
written to the logs.
