Windows Installer XP Home

Mike T

I am using Windows XP Home had SP1, upgraded to SP2, various problems,
took off SP2 and reverted to SP1. Ran sfc /scannow. Some files were
obviously updated and replaced. I now get Windows installer pop up when
I try and runs some programs, also if I download new version of software
from MS and then run install , Installer starts then stops with error
"The windows installer could not be accessed. This can occur if you are
in safe mode or the installer is not installed correctly" This happens
with several installs including MSN Messenger update that generates
error 1601 ...

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Were you renaming the files in system32, it's not entirely clear, but I think
that's what it meant. I think it reinstalls installer from the dllcache at
start.

Good luck

Hi Ramesh,
Thanks for reply, unfortunately it did not work, can I download a new
installer and then install that without using Windows installer! Any
install starts, screen shows configuring installer then stops with
previous mentioned error

Windows XP already contains Windows Installer version 2.0, and a download is not necessary.

Mike,

Try this, from Start, Run

msiexec /unreg
msiexec /regserver

If nothing helps, try a repair installation:
