I shall apologize now for intriducing a subject that perhaps has been
discussed. I have xp home. I recently purchased ms office 2000. While I was
installing it two issue came up:

Error 1919 ODBC a datat source access data base ODBC error 6, this came up
during the install. 95 % of my office and relevant programs run, however I
can not get woord to become my default email editor or I can not bring up any
help in excel or outlook. When I try to open those two functions it ask for
an install from the disc. I comply and the error message comes up in regards
to windows installer error 1635. I have downloaded the newest 3.0 from ms but
to no avail I can't seem to fix it.
Please understand I am a new to this computer thing.
Thank you in advance for your consideration

That doesn't sound too good... Do you have SP2 installed on your pc?
If not install it and see if the errors correct themselves. If you do
have SP2 you might have to try to reinstall or install the latest MDAC
components. Maybe this can help:

"Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source: MS Access Database"
error message when you run the Setup program for Office 2000

John,

Thank you for the tip. I have SP2 installed already. the following error
message is the message that shows up when I try to install office 2000.

Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source: dBASE Files. ODBC error 6:
Verify that the file dBASE Files exists and that you can access it.

What would my easiest steps be to try and correct this issue since I am
hesitate to go into the registry and possibly make a big mistake since I am
so very much of a computer newbie.

Thank you for the tip.

It sounds like you have MDAC problems, the files might have gotten mixed
up or corrupted by another poorly written software installation program.
Most likely you will have to reinstall MDAC. I don't want to induce
you in error so I think that your best bet from here is to post the
question to one of the Office newsgroups, or for another one in this
group to offer advice. Perhaps:

news://news.microsoft.com:119/microsoft.public.office.setup
news://news.microsoft.com:119/microsoft.public.office.misc

Maybe these links wont work properly for you if so just find the groups
another way and post there. If you get told to reinstall or install the
latest MDAC then go here:

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...95-efc2-4f8e-a9e0-3a1afbd5922e&displaylang=en

AFTER you install the above then go here:

Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 (SP8) for Windows XP (KB829558)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c4-350e-4cd0-a12a-d7f70a153156&displaylang=en

You have to, or should install the jet pack also, it doesn't install
with the MDAC package but it is an important part of the whole deal.

In any case if you are to install MDAC always (ALWAYS) install the
latest compatible version for your Operating System. At the present XP
is compatible with the latest release but some of the older Windows are
not. Having the latest MDAC is usually good practice, it doesn't hurt
anything keeping it current.

However, this might be a minor little bug that someone else or someone
in the Office newsgroups knows about. Someone else will have to take it
from here. If you find no other necessary help here or on the Office
groups start a new thread so that another one can pick it up.

Good luck,

John

Hmmm... yes indeed. It says there that:

"Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 contains core Data
Access components such as the Microsoft SQL Server™ OLE DB provider and
ODBC driver. This redistributable installer for the MDAC 2.8 SP1 release
installs the same Data Access components as Microsoft Windows XP SP2."

But then it says:

"Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME;
Windows NT"

So it seems that XP doesn't support this "back door" approach to
reinstalling MDAC. Probably can only be installed from SP2 or an
install switch that we don't know of. Possibly or probably part of sfp
or the now "new" PC Health features that Microsoft tested on Windows ME
before making it a "feature" of XP. 'nough said!

Here it says that there is no web release for it:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;231943

But the one prior to that (MDAC 2.8) says:

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 contains core Data Access
components such as the Microsoft SQL Server™ OLE DB provider and ODBC
driver. This redistributable installer for the MDAC 2.8 release installs
the same Data Access components as Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

and:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME;
Windows NT; Windows XP

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en

Perhaps trying to reinstall SP2 or the older 2.8 might work, but really
this one is for the MVP's now. It could be treacherous trying to
install older MDAC components on top of newer ones, could trash your XP
installation! Reinstalling SP2 probably won't hurt anything but I don't
think the same can be said for MDAC 2.8. if XP SP2 even allows it. I
think XP SP3 should be in the works now...

Good Day John,

Another day has passed and I no closer to fixing my issue. With the limited
research that I have done that there should be a simple method to employ to
fix this issue. I have "googled" this issue and it seems to be more common
than I thought.
My guess is that the MDAC issue and windows installer issue are related to
one another. How do I get the MVPs to help with this issue?
Once again I appreciate your help with the easy to understand explanations,
it makes it easier to comprehend.
I will continue to review this site and others looking for a fix. Thank you
in advance!

Because none of the MVP's (or other equally talented people) reading
this newsgroup has an answer for you. I don't use Office 2000 so I
don't, either. However, I'd suggest posting your question in one of the
newsgroups set up specifically for Office where you'll find experts who
have undoubtedly run across your issue before. Here is a list of all
the MS newsgroups so you can find the right Office newsgroup:

Malke

Hi Brian,

All of the information that I have read on the subject points to MDAC as
the culprit and I have only seen 2 suggested methods to repair the problem:

1- To copy the HKLM & HKCU ODBC registry keys from an IDENTICAL
computer to your computer and,

2- To reinstall MDAC, be it by applying SP2 if you don't have it
installed on your computer or to initiate the MDAC.inf file.

As I and Malke have suggested in earlier posts you should really post
this question on the Office groups where the folks with in depth
knowledge of Office issues can offer assistance.

For research purposes only I am pointing you to these articles:
How to resolve problems that occur with the JET component and with the
MDAC component
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;870630

Note that the article applies to all flavours of Windows, read the
specifics for XP. Also note that now, according to that article and
contrary to what I said earlier, you're supposed to install the JET pack
before MDAC on XP systems. The article also contains important
information for the steps to take before trying to reinstall MDAC
(emptying temp folders, TIF, etc.)

"Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source" error messages when you
run the Setup program for Office 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818954

There you will find information on installing MDAC from the .inf file.

NOTE: THESE ARE NOT SUGGESTED FIXES! They are meant for you to
acquaint yourself with the innards of MDAC.

In my first post I said that "It doesn't look too good..." and it
doesn't. Be warned that reinstalling MDAC could very well be the first
step to a repair reinstall or even complete reinstall of XP. It could
work like a charm or blow up in your face! Not good news when you have
to rollback or reinstall MDAC!

Once again and finally, you are best to ask about this in the Office
groups, they know the subtleties and pitfalls related to Office
installation.

Good luck,

John
