I have an XP HOME SP2 system that runs great (and in fact, just did a
repair install last week as I moved it to new hardware). However, I
tried to download and install Windows Installer 3.1 and it failed
without explanation. So I tried through Windows Updates, same result.
The problem is that everything is behind the scenes - it hides the
install process, and I don't even know where the actual program resides,
so I can't -clean things out- and start over. Any suggestions as to
how to go about debugging this would be appreciated. Though I don't
remember how, once I got as far as getting an error code (oh - it was
from the application log), but entering it into microsoft.com search or
google didn't produce anything related to this application.
One clue - my wife tried to do this before I got home and it's possible
she installed a 'patch' to Installler rather than the new version. Is
there any 'patch history' on XP that I can review?
Thanks!
