I recently had to replace my motherboard (to ASUS A7N8X)
and at the time I also upgraded my cpu to AMD Athlon XP
2500 Barton. The computer cycles through the post and
then gives me the message that windows was improperly
shut down and to choose to start in normal, safe, etc. I
have tried all of these, but it always recycles back to
the "improperly shut down screen". Help. Thanks, Gary

Did you change the motherboard and cpu and put the original disk back in ?
Changing the motherboard has probably upset the product activation hardware
hash.
You'll have to perform a repair install and reacivate.

.
Thanks for your reply. My second problem is that I have
several computers with Windows XP and am not sure which
one was installed on this computer. Is there any way to
determine which one it might be? Thanks again.

3 possible options I can think of, off the top of my head.

1. Boot the recovery console and see if the $winnt$.inf file is still around
from the installation, this may have the product key, mine has, but I
installed this system with RIS.

2. Check the other systems to see if they still have their $winnt$.inf. You
should be able to use a process of elimination, to identify the correct CD.

3. Search on the internet for a key finder program. There's loads out there,
I found one in the first hit, and it worked !
Run the key finder on your other systems, and by a process of
elimination you will be able to identify the correct retail CD.
