Hi
I am having problems installing any type of hardware onto
with a Windows 2000 laptop.

WHen the hardware is installed (PCMCIA) the operating
system detects the hardware correctly. However, it then
seems to search the disk for drivers etc, because the disk
access light keeps flashing and I can hear the disk
spinning. The problem is this continues for 3-4 hours
before I give up.

Any ideas what could be causing the problem
Thanks, Ian

I'm guessing here, how old is your system??

Possible corrupt files and or sectors on the ole HD.
try SFC and choose the option to fix now. I can't
remember the correct syntax..you can find it on windows
explorer help section. also check your hd for damaged
sectors

Thanks - I will let you know how it goes

sfc is taking just as long - it would appear I either have a very fragmented
drive or ???

Thanks for the help

If you believe that you might be having some form of drive structure or even
drive corruption, I would run a full chkdsk first. Go to Start, Run, and
type chkdsk c: /f ... it will say that it cant run because it cant get full
access to the disk, and can it run on the next boot, and just say yes.
Reboot the system and let the chkdsk complete.

In terms of the SFC, Windows File Protection writes it actions into the
System Event log, so check that to see if it logged anything there as well.
