I have become hyper aware lately of a given window I'm working in suddenly
going inactive while I'm in the middle of working. Is there are setting that
can be tweeked so that a window remains active longer. It's really
frustrating and doesn't necessarily seem related to wether I am actively
using the keyboard or not....
In fact it just happened as I was typing that last sentence.
Can anyone help?

What program window - email, Word?
And what do you mean by "going inactive?" You might have a dialogue box
(waiting for your input) hidden under the "top" window, for ex. You might
have some malware acting as well. You might not have sufficient ressources
(RAM, slow CPU). Give more details: ex. computer freezes for a few moments,
keyboard not responding etc.

TweakUI will keep your window active, but it won't stop whatever is stealing
focus away from your window from running.
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
is where you can download TweakUI. After you install it to your Control
Panel, go to the General Tab and check the box next to "Prevent Applications
from stealing focus". Click OK and that should keep your window active. If I
find what is stealing focus on my computer, I'll post it and you can see if
it's your culprit as well.
