This is correct, but they've made it a bit easier--according to the press
release you won't have to type in the full serial number on a bios-locked
OEM machine. I haven't had a chance to try the new system on a machine
which is not already validated.
Security patches will still be available without validation both at the
download center and via AutoUpdate.
Bill,
I went there on a test unit earlier, and it was set to the old style still
and asked for the 25.
Not wishing to crawl under the desk, I opted out.
I saw some difference in the behavior when I went from an already validated
machine, but I can't recall enough to say just what it was--basically, it
was faster than the old behavior.
I went to Window Update website today and i have to
install the Windows Genuine validation Tool (KB892130).
Is this normal and required now only on the Window Update
Website?
This is a new requirement for all downloads except security-related patches.
Security patches will still be available via AutoUpdate or via Windows
Update without validation.
Microsoft published their plans to make this change a considerable time
ago--I think around January 1st or so, and they've had the process out there
on a voluntary basis for roughly the same time to get the bugs worked out.
The Microsoft Update and Windows Update utilities, which
provide notifications of new patches, will require
validation. http://news.com.com/Piracy-

thanks for the help. I now know that it's ok to install
it since it's required for window update utitilites.
