Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool

i am asked to download some additional components in order to update on
microsoft update. when i say yes, it initializes and then tells me that
windows genuine advantage validation tool failed to install. then i cannot
update. any solutions?

it's used with XP
and not Win2k
