I am trying to turn on windows xp firewall after uninstalling ZoneAlarm. I
can't find the setting. I go to Control Panel but no firewall setting is
available. Any suggestions? Thanks.

| In Control Panel, click on the icon for the Windows Security Center.

This assumes that the OP has SP2 installed, and he might not. In that case,
he should open Network Connections in Control Panel and select the Security
tab for the connection he's using.

And I have to ask..........why did you uninstall Zone Alarm? It is
certainly a much better firewall app than the Microsoft firewall. Zone
Alarm will stop malware from getting to your system, and if something were
to get to your computer, Zone Alarm would stop it from propogating out from
your system which Microsoft"s firewall will not do. Think about it!!

Though I am not the one you are asking, for me, I removed my Norton
Firewall in favor of the Windows SP2 firewall because I noticed after
loading SP2 that there was a little lag loading pages vs the Windows SP2
firewall. I have a 3000 Kbps down/250 up with cable. I play a web-based
game where a slight lag is noticeable and hindering, even just a fraction
of a second.

Actually, I don't even need to run a software firewall, as I am behind a
router on a home network, the router acting as a hardware firewall.
Windows firewall does inform me when a new program sets itself up to call
out the first time. I also run "Netmeter", a speed reporting freeware
utility (up & down speeds), so if something were to start uploading out
I'd know something was up, & then I guess the task manager would tell me
what.

To tell you the truth I'd like to shut off the Windows firewall and just
go with my router's hardware firewall. But, Windows XP SP2 has a glitch
and is screwy. Unlessthis problem has been addressed with an update.
When you run with no firewall, Windows, as it should, tells you that you
are in danger. And keeps telling you. So what you do is go into security
settings click the box that basically says "yes I know I am at risk, this
is my choice, do not keep informing me". Well, that works for a little
while, but for some reason Windows re-sets itself after a few reboots it
seems to me. And there I am getting the warning balloons again.
...D.

That's a popular misconception. You still need a software firewall, to
control how your computer connects to the network, including the Internet.

I have WXP-HomeSP1 and there is no "Windows Security Center" or "Security
Center" in Control Panel. The last icon is User Accounts. SEARCH doesn't
find it either. Agent Ransack also came up empty....

Don't be surprised if you don't find some of the things mentioned on these
NGs on your XP machine.

I have XP with SP1 and there is NO SECURITY tab to be found there either.
All that's listed there is our ISP, our Satellite connection UBS device, and
local area connections - nothing about *Security* whatsoever. How many
versions of WXP-Home are there???

Only people who haven't upgraded to Service Pack 2 are missing the Windows
Security Center. And anyone who hasn't upgraded by now is missing a lot
more.

My mistake, it's the Advanced tab.

Ted, I don't think so. Where'd you get this "popular misconception" idea?
I think you have an "unpopular misconception here". ;-)

A hardware firewall alone works fine. So you know, I have run without it
(software firewall) for days, only switching back because of the warning
balloon problem mentioned. Plus my 81 year old father upstairs on a P2 &
recently a P3 (win 98 & win 2000) has never run a firewall. I have
another P3 down here that I use to get torrents with and have never run a
firewall on it. And my friend of many years runs a Netgear router, same
brand I run, slightly different model. He has been running with no
software firewall for over a year now, 3 computers.. He has had no
problem doing this. ,Two of his being Windows XP & one Windows 2000. He
leaves them on 24-7 so the minor problem I had with the warning balloon
doesn't affect him.
