My windows firewall is disabled and i cannot turn it back on (the text and
boxes are gray instead of black). I tried to change it in safe mode with
networking but still couldnt. why is it like this and how do i fix it?

Assuming your computer is not a member of an Active Directory domain such as
might be the case in a business logon as a local administrator and use
regedit to open the registry editor. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft and if you see any entry for
WindowsFirewall then right click the WindowsFirewall key and select delete.
The reboot your computer to see if the problem is fixed. The fact that you
can not enable your firewall indicates a good possibility that your computer
is infected with malware and you should take steps to check for and try to
remove what is found. --- Steve

hey that worked perfectly. I just wanted to say thanks for replying to my
post so quickly. Also, in case anyone else come across that problem, I not
only found windowsfirewall entries at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft but also at >
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft. I deleted all of them and my firewall
is up and running. thanks again steve.

This was extremely helpful, as I had the same problem! It also helped me fix
other directory issues. I really appreciate this post! Thank You!

Worked for me too after two days of trying to follow all the microsoft issued
fixes. From now on I am going to this board and look for Steve. Straight
talk that works! Thanks Steve.....Mark
