Windows firewall cannot be turned on after installing SP2

Hi,

I have just re-installed Windows XP on my laptop and am installing all the
required updates. I have tried to install SP2 twice now and each time, I am
not able to get onto the internet nor can I turn on the firewall (the check
boxes are greyed out) as there is a message that says something like "the
network administrator has turned on group policy settings". I have
uninstalled SP2 both times and I can now get onto the internet. I have
previously had SP2 installed with no problems. I haven't installed any
anti-virus software yet as I wanted to install SP2 and all the windows
updates first. Could this be the problem? Can someone tell me what I have to
do to install SP2 successfully?

Thanks,

Vanessa

This is a Windows 2000 newsgroup. I suggest you post in one of the XP
newsgroups and/or the security.homeowners newsgroup. Having said that if
your computer is not a member of an Active Directory domain [usually found
in businesses or larger networks and requires a domain controller server]
then your symptoms indicate that you may have a virus on your computer and
could explain why you can not install SP2. You must make sure that you use a
firewall before you ever connect to the internet after installing the
operating system or your risk is high of becoming infected. Pre - SP XP does
NOT enable the built in firewall by default and the user must do such. The
link below would be good for you to review on how to take basic steps to
secure your computer/network. --- Steve

Thanks Steve. I actually thought I had posted under the XP support group. I
have been reading through other posts and have re-formatted my hard drive and
clean installed Windows again as it was the only solution. My firewall is now
working!
