I am running winXP with 512mb Ram. I have just install ZoneAlarm and two
questions keep coming up.
1. Do you want to allow Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services to act
as a server? What does this mean and if it is not needed, what can be done
about it?

2. Do you want to allow ExShell to access the internet? What is ExShell
and is it needed?

BTW I have run both Ad Aware and Spybot and both indicate no spyware is on
the PC. I also ran Norton's Antivirus and it found nothing.

Any info is appreciated.

Personal software firewalls have the same effect on your computer's
security as a go-fast sticker on your car's speed. Get rid of ZA and
get a hardware firewall instead. Those can be had for as low as about
$50.

I forgot to mention that I have a D-link router
installed

And this router can not be configured as firewall? I know my Linksys
doubles as router/firewall/switch.
The primary reason for using ZA is that it allows
me to know what is trying to go out as well as come in.

ZA does that, doesn't it. Bloody annoying. I have a dog like that too.
Runs to the frontdoor, barks at nothing, comes back and wants a cookie
for doing her job. Gives ya a nice feeling of all-is-well, but when
push comes to shove, she can be found napping on the landing. Zone
Alarm used to bug me every 5 minutes with more information than I
could possibly use and made it all sound very threatening. "The
garbage men! The garbage men! They are stealing our garbage! Wooo woo
woo woo! Orange passers-by alert!" Yes, it's OK, some people /do/
portscans, no need to bug me, now sit down and let me scratch your
head, there's a good firewall.
Just block the ports you don't use and which are known for exploits
(like 135) and do so at the hardware firewall. Have all the Windows
updates and patches installed, run Norton Anti-Virus (or something
similar) and keep it up to date.
