With all the update downloads this week from Microsoft and
Norton - I booted this morning and appeared a "Windows
File Protection" box that said "Files that are required to
run properly have been rewplaced by unrecognized
versions. To maintain system stability Windows must
restore the original versions of the files. Insert your
Windows 2000 Professional CD"

Windows had two updates yesterday (Root Certificates
Update and Recommended Update 822831)that may have caused
the message. Norton also uppdated its security software.
I finally "accepted" the "unrecognized" files because I
had to get to work. The computer seems to be OK. Did I
do harm by accepting the "unrecognized" files?

Thank you.

It sounds like the Norton software may have replaced a Windows file with a
version of it's own. The file which the hotfix you mentioned replaces
should be this:

Date Time Version Size File Name
-------------------------------------------------------
11-Jun-2003 11:40 5.0.2195.6754 114,448 Newdev.dll

You can check with your Symantec doumentation for the file that their update
touches. Alternatively, Windows File Rotection events log to the System
event log, so there may be an event there detailing the file which WFP
noticed as being different.
