My Windows XP Home OEM says critical system files have
been changed and asks for the XP install CD about 5 times
a day. Also, every device driver I install triggers a
warning that it is not WHQL certified, even when they are
[the new Nvidia video and Nforce2 platform drivers, for
example].
To top it off, the system frequently pauses
intermittently, with the only application running greyed
out as though another one has priority. When this
happens, Task Manager will open normally, but the running
program or operation continues to stutter, as does mouse
movement and all other functions.
I have been running Symantec's virus protection
constantly and doing regular updates, and no virus has
ever been found.
