George, for my desktop I created a "slipstreamed" XP CD for this type of
situation. I used the directions at this site:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm
It explains the steps of a "manual" build very clearly and I was successful
in my efforts.
If you look around on the internet, you can find programs that automate the
CD creation for you. Whichever method you choose, you will need a regular
XP setup CD (retail or OEM supplied) - the OEM disks must be of the type
that use the regular MS setup routine and not the specialized OEM recovery
program. And you need a copy of SP2 - downloadable from Microsoft.
Use your slipstreamed CD for repairs but hang on to your original XP CD as
that's the one that is "officially" licensed and it should be kept on hand.
