How do I change the directory that Windows Explorer
starts in.

Also, when you right click on the desktop, you see the
New Option.

How do I delete all the entries other than New Folder and
New Shortcut, and what would be even better is preventing
all the extra entries from ever appearing again, as I
never use them.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

1) This KB article explains in details on how to customize the views in Windows Explorer:

HOW TO: Customize the Windows explorer views in Windows XP

2) You can use TweakUI to customize the 'New' entries. Under TweakUI, navigate to the 'Templates'
section and uncheck the ones that are not required. If you want, you can remove the entries
permanently by deleting them. TweakUI can be downloaded from:

what would be even better is preventing all the extra entries from ever appearing again.

The additional ShellNew entries are created when you install a software, not created by XP.
