Group,

I just started having trouble with WE: When I'm adding folders or renaming
files I have to do a refresh to get the changes to show up. Is there a
setting for this? or is it a bug? Not running sp2.

Thanks

Are the changes not showing up which would be due to a slow refresh rate in
Explorer

Or are they being added to the end of the list of files and folders - the
default behavior for Explorer? This is helpful to keep track of what has
been changed and what hasn't if working with a large number of
files/folders within a single location. Whenever it's convenient, refresh
or one of the Sort commands can be used to resort the items.

I have to do a refresh to get the change to show up at all. At that point,
things are sorted. We had this problem on a pc at church (XP Pro, maybe),
mostly used by me. Then it stopped. I wondered if there was a reason it
started at all, or if it's a random bug.

It can be driver related - specifically video drivers. Update if there is a
newer driver available. If the system is RAM challenged and/or shares RAM
with the display adapter, consider installing more. Would not recommend
changing default virtual memory settings in this case either. It's a major
lifeline in low RAM situations for keeping the operating system and
programs running efficiently. May want to change System> Performance>
Settings> Visual Effects to "adjust for best performance" too.

Or performance related - scan for adware, virus. Clean up temp files. Run
chkdsk and defrag if it's been a while since these tasks have been
performed.

I like Diskeeper from Executive Software. The Pro version is required for
XP Professional.

That's a good app too. Haven't tried it but have seen good reports on it.

The engine is enterprise grade. I have seen it keep working in situations
where the system defragger and Norton's just stop. It is very thrifty with
resources so I use the Set and Forget option and let it run in the
background. Disk activity doesn't phase it. For NTFS it has a boot time
defragger for consolidating the file system and swap file, so it is
excellent for freshening up a system after conversion from Fat32 to ntfs.
It is also very fast. It is particularly adept at defragging a partition
that has only a little unused space left and in low memory systems. Did I
mention that I like it?
