David,
This may be caused by a malware Browser Helper Object which causes Windows Explorer & Internet Explorer processes to terminate. If you see the Error-Reporting dialog, click "to see what data this report contains" and identify the Module Name causing this error. In most cases, it may be the spyware DLL.
To test with: Disable third-party browser extensions in Internet Explorer: [Also applies to Windows Explorer]
1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.
4. Restart Internet Explorer.
If this helps, scan the system using Ad-Aware and eliminate the parasites:

I get a "Windows Explorer" box which says
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close... I have the option of sending a report or not
sending. When I select "Don't Send" my computer slows
down considerably. I check the processes and see
that "SVCHOST.EXE" is runnig at 95percent or higher.
