I've just converted from my trusted ol' 98SE to XP - Wow!
Yes, there is a difference - XP is a lot faster and more responsive starting
up in about half the time than 98SE did. It was a bit cumbersome installing
from scratch and the first installation steps (partitioning etc) required to
click button(s) that simply haven't been there - just the round Help button
was in place, nothing else! I could trick the dead-end situation by asking
Help "What to do next.." and it told me what the button was and I could
continue by pressing ALT-"first letter of the button" ..the keyboard
shortcut saved my life! My hds running both in udma 5 mode and I feel this
never has been with 98SE.
OK, my question 1 - how can I make Windows Explorer to start with My
Computer open as default instead of My Documents. This truly bugs me!

Thx for help

"My Computer" highlighted in left side with all drives visible but not expanded
and C: highlighted in right side:

Right click on the shortcut icon - select properties and then select shortcut.

In the Target put:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,/select,c:

I would play around with a duplicate of the shortcut until you're happy with the
results.

Thank you to all of you!
I'll get back once I stumble over new questions

HOW TO: Customize the Windows Explorer Views in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307856

Wes and all, I want to have Win-Explorer open *My Computer* - not any folder
or C drive! It seems your hints are not covering my issue..

You didn't read Gerry's post. I tried it and it works.
Just read another of your posts. Maybe you did read Gerry's post.
Sorry. ;-(

Do ya want a shortcut to My Computer on the Desktop??
I tried this also and it works.

To get a Windows Explorer icon on the Desktop.
That opens to My Computer.
Right click Desktop | New | Shortcut |
Paste this in the Target:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

...
No worries, Wes, Gerry's post was ok except that there is no Windows
Explorer icon anywhere in the Start button area. MS seem not to know there
own OS ;-) However, I created a shortcut with those parameters and all is
fine.

Another question - In the Start button (bar) there is the OE icon under the
IE - is there a way to modify the start parameter of this particular icon?
... or can I add another shortcut to this section?

question 2:
Is there a way to remove the My Music folder from the Start bar? I wonder
that there is no Remove when right-clicking it.

Sorry being a nuisance.. :-)

greetings from Brisbane(Australia)

The default location for Windows Explorer on the Start button is more
remote than it might be! Should be Start, All Programs, Accessories,
Windows Explorer. However, you can customise Windows Explorer and the
Start button so many ways that it is easy to forget what is the default
<g>. Can you now find it?

How do want to modify the Start parameter for Outlook Express? The start
options are in Outlook Express!

I have an Outlook Express icon in my Quick Launch bar along with 4
others and find this more convenient than accessing from the Start
button options. Advice from Help:
To add a program to the Quick Launch bar

a.. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the icon for the program
you want to add, and then drag it to the Quick Launch portion of the
taskbar located next to the Start button.
The icon for that program appears next to the other Quick Launch icons
on the taskbar.

Notes

a.. If the Quick Launch bar is not displayed, right-click an empty
area on the taskbar, point to Toolbars, and then click Quick Launch.
b.. If you right-click an empty area on the taskbar and do not see the
Toolbars option, click Lock the Taskbar to clear the check mark.

Hope this helps.

Steve,

You are not a nuisance, these groups are here for you, or anyone, to ask
questions. I certainly do. ;-)

Couple of ways to remove My Music.

From:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Click the "S" and scroll way, way down to Start Menu.

{Other info there as well.}

Right click the Start button | Properties | Start Menu | Customize button |
Advanced tab |

[[Now you can customize the look & feel of your Start menu in whatever way
you want! There are a number of items (Control Panel, My Computer, My
Documents, My Music, and My Pictures) for which you have these three
options:

Display as link
Display as menu
Don't display this item

On the General tab (after pressing Customize on the Taskbar and Start Menu
properties), you can also change the Internet & E-mail programs listed on
the Start menu. The drop-down boxes should contain all programs installed on
your system.]]

Bingo, thx a bunch Wes, I was already wondering how to get the Favorites
working, in the Start menu, like it was in 98SE! XP is a truly thoughtful
layout but it takes time to find the way around - it's somewhat different
and much more complete than 98SE.

Nope it's definitely not there in this location but I have a shortcut on the

I am running Quotefix with OE and already dragged the shortcut into the

Hey, thx a bunch, I was already wondering where it has gone - why the heck
is it not on by default? ;-)

Steve,

It does take a little time to find your way around.
But, it's well worth it.
I moved up from Windows 98. ;-)
