Windows Explorer & WMDC keep dying...

Running Vista Ultimate...

Almost 90% of the items on the "default" page of my start menu (the one
that comes up with the last used & pinned apps), when I click on them,
Windows Explorer dies and has to restart. I can get the same apps to run
when accessing them directly through All Programs (even things like Word &
Excel are dying!). How often does this happen... numerous times a day.

Same thing happens with Windows Mobile Device Center... I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling... but every time I launch it, it dies on me.

I've tried using the solution suggestion applet, with no luck. In the past
I'd usually drop the DVD back in and hope it works... but not sure if
there's a better way with Vista. No, I can't do a system restore because
it's been going on for quite some time.

Ideas?

I'm not sure if we had the same problem but I was receiving a ton of
program not responding errors when starting explorer, control panel
and other applications. I would try again and get the same error, then
again and it would work.

Turned out to be some kind of file access "clash" with BitDefender.
I replaced BitDefender with another AV program and all of these
issues disappeared.

Unfortunately I don't think that's it (I'm running McAfee... happens even
when I have it disabled).

No idea.. arg.
