I start Windows 2000 pro, log in, then Start -> Programs ->
Accessories -> Windows Explorer

The Windows Explorer window opens.
After about 2 seconds, it closes itself.
Immediately, ONLY the desktop wallpaper appears.
2 second delay, the icons are displayed on the wallpaper.
Immediately, the Start bar appears, but now there aren't
any non-Microsoft programs displayed in the system tray.
Oh, they're still running, but they don't show up in the
system tray.

Sometimes, I can start Windows Explorer and have it stay on
the screen, but when I click on "My Computer", it
immediately exits and it goes through the above cycle.

Odd note: I had this problem under Windows 98 as well.

Obviously, I'm "doing something wrong", but I have no idea
what. Is it Windows Update?

I really don't think operator error is the cause.

By chance, did you "upgrade" win98 to 2000, or is this a clean isntall? If
it's an upgrade, it sounds like you inherited something evil from win98.

In any case:

o Scan for viruses. You can get a free online scan at www.antivirus.com.
o Try sfc /scannow from the command prompt. Get out your WIN2K CD.

o If this is an upgrade, I recommend backing up your personal data files
and doing a clean install. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it in terms
of reliability and speed, honest.

o Yes, run windows update, but AFTER you fix this issue.

o If you don't already have a firewall and antivirus program, GET THEM.
Really.
