When viewing pictures or trying to upload pictures in the thumbnail version
all associated windows close. I can open the folder using list format and
double click pictures to see them, but even if I click once for the small
preview on the left I get an error and all windows close

Please post a copy of the Event Viewer error report.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

What does the error message that you get say?

Is this happening in all folders that contain pictures when you try to view
thumbnails, or just one?

If just one, delete the "Thumbs.db" file in the folder and try again. (It's
a hidden file, so you may need to enable the viewing of them: in Windows
Explorer, Tools (in the menu) > Folder Options > View (tab) > tick "Show
hidden files and folders".)

If needs be, see if you can pin down the cause to a particular one of the
pictures. Delete the Thumbs.db file, create a new folder and put half of
these pictures in that, try the Thumbnails view again. If one crashes and
the other doesn't, delete the Thumbs.db, create another new folder, move
half of *those* files into it, and so on, whittling down to one image if
possible. It won't take long, thanks to the power of two!

Here is what it said in the Event viewer. I am not smart on what any of that
means. After trouble shooting some more. It only happens in two folders
(my April and May '09 picture folders). I am going to try reformatting my
camera card and start new folders. Also, I couldn't view the thumb files
even when I selected view hidden files.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module
h264codec.ax, version 1.0.365.0, fault address 0x00016b76.

I have narrowed it down to the video files from my digital camera that are
stored in the same folder. When I remove them from the folder I can view the
folder normally. However, now the folder I store my videos in keepds crashing
the computer. I just made a new 5 second video and it did the same to a new
folder. It is also retroactive to videos from years ago. It seems liek some
default selection might be trying to access the files incorrectly.

Formatting is not the answer. The problem seems to lie with an HDTV
Tuner Card associated with Pinnacle.

Find this key on the Registry by selecting Start, Run, type regedit and
click on OK. Place the cursor on the key and export the key saving it as
a txt file. Open the file (it will probably be in My Documents) and
select Edit. Select All and paste into a further post.
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler"

Has the Pinnacle software been installed for long? The point being has
it worked for a while and then started to generate the error or has the
error been occuring even since installing? Uninstalling the software and
reinstalling may solve the problem.

If you're happy with simple registry editing, try this, which has worked for
many with similar problems: run regedit and navigate your way to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

Back up the key for safety, then delete the "Default" value on the right,
close and try viewing again.

If that doesn't work, in a command prompt (Start button > [All] Programs >
Accessories > Command Prompt) type:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

and press Enter. Then run

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

and Enter, and try once more. This unloads and reloads the media preview,
shmedia.dll. (For problematic image previews, do this to shimgvw.dll
instead.)

Thanks for reporting the outcome.
