Windows Explorer Problem

When I go to Start - My Recent Documents, I can no longer open any documents
or pictures from there. I have to open up the respective program, e.g. MS
Excel in order to open up a document and work in it. I also cannot go via My
Computer and open up pictures or documents from there.

Whatever I do I will get the following message: "Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on
might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem." I can then send
the report. The message also offers me a Debug button, but it does not do
anything.

This message comes up when I try to open a file, and it will then shut the
whole window down putting me back to my desktop without opening the requested
file. When I go via e.g. MS Excel, I am able to work there but the message
will sit in the background until I shut everything down.

This problem came yesterday very sudden and I just don't know why or what is
wrong. I made a system restore to an earlier date, but unfortunatly it did
not cure the problem. Why do I get a message from Windows Explorer when I
work in e.g. Word or Excel and Explorer is not even open? Does anyone know
what this is and why, and what can be done to resolve this problem and bring
it back to normal?

I have IE6, Windows XP Pro version 2002, Service Pack 2

Thank you all for your time and efforts!
