I have Windows XP Pro w/SP2. Frequently, but not all the time, when I
attempt to view or use My Computer, My Documents, Network Places, or the
Recycle Bin, I get a message similar to the following:

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Please tell
Microsoft about this problem..."

I'vee been unable to figure out what is causing the repeated generation of
this error and System Restore doesn't help. I'd like some non-destructive
ideas on how to correct this. Thanks.

First do a deep check for spyware and others bug:

http://onlinescan.avast.com/
http://support.f-secure.com/ols/start.html
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
an after maybe help you:
a) Start/Run/type: eventvwr.msc (press Enter)
In the left hand pane will be 3 categories (Application, Security, and
System). Please click on each to find errors
b) Start/run/type: SFC /Scannow
This will scan your system for any changed windows protected files and will
prompt you for your CD to replace them. Please visit Windows Update
immediately afterwards.
c) If that doesn't correct the problem try a repair install of XP
