Windows Explorer Popup Message

I have received an unsolicited message window (from
Microsoft Windows Explorer supposedly) which claims that I
have spyware software on my computer that will allow
unknown external sources to monitor everything that I do
on my computer, as well as to install new software on my
computer. It them says that I can download a scanner
program that will detect and remove this spyware from my
computer. I am suspicious about doing this. Is this
spyware a known security exposure, and is this
downloadable scanner a valid solution?

These popup messages have one purpose, to sell the software
advertised. Software advertised this way is generally of no value,
and may damage your computer.

You should, however, be protected against spyware just as you should
be protected against viruses. For spyware protection, get Spybot S&D
and HijackThis (both free), and expert advice at SWI Forums. Complete

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
 
I'm almost computer illiterate but I agree that this
sounds like a hoax. It seems likely that the download
offered is itself a virus. Have you tried any of the
websites on internet hoaxes? I like hoaxbusters. I think
it's http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org but if not, you can find
it on Google. Good luck. DMM
